Washington farmers grow five classes of wheat, but soft white wheat (SWW) accounted for 90 percent of total 2005 wheat production in the state. Nearly one-half of all U.S. white wheat comes from Washington alone. Acre per acre, no state can match Washington’s abundant wheat production. Washington wheat farmers produce almost one-half the amount of grain that No. 1-ranked Kansas does. But they manage to do it on one-third of the acres! The value of wheat production in 2004 totaled $551 million, while the ripple effect of wheat dollars on the state’s economy creates jobs and revenue in food processing, transportation, wholesale and retail industries.
